In defence of the tier list

It looks like a meme format. It is closer to a genuinely good argument-generating machine.

The tier list has a reputation as the laziest form of opinion on the internet — drag some images into rows, post a screenshot, collect replies. That reputation is roughly half deserved and completely misses what the format is good at.

It forces a decision

A ranked list of ten shows lets you hedge. A tier list does not. Two things are either in the same tier or they are not, and the moment you put a show you like in B while something you like less sits in A, you have to explain yourself.

That forced commitment is where the argument comes from. Nobody replies to a list of things you thought were fine.

It exposes the criteria

The interesting question about any tier list is never the placements. It is what the person was ranking for. Animation quality? Emotional impact? Rewatch value? How well it holds up after the ending?

Two people can produce completely different lists and both be right, and finding out which axis someone was using tells you more about their taste than a score out of a hundred ever will.

It is legible at a glance

A paragraph of criticism takes a minute to read and is hard to compare with someone else. A tier list is comparable instantly — you can see where two people disagree without reading a word.

That is why it travels, and why it generates more discussion per unit of effort than almost any other format.

How to make one worth arguing with

The difference between a lazy tier list and a good one is almost entirely in the setup.

  • Name the axis in the title. "Best fights" and "best shows" produce different lists.
  • Keep the pool tight. Twelve entries you have actually seen beats forty you half remember.
  • Use the bottom tiers. A list where nothing is below B is not a ranking, it is a list of things you like.
  • Put one defensible outlier in it. That is the placement people will reply to.
