About Yuuji Itadori

Yuuji Itadori is the cheerful, hard-hitting lead of Jujutsu Kaisen, a student who hosts the curse king Sukuna and tries to stay decent while doing it.

Who is Yuuji Itadori?

Yuuji is the lead of Jujutsu Kaisen. Yuuji's life changes when he consumes one of Sukuna's severed fingers to protect Megumi, becoming the vessel for the ancient curse. He ends up at Tokyo Jujutsu High as a first-year, with Gojo as his personal mentor. The leadership wants him dead from the start. Gojo explains that the execution is postponed until Yuuji has eaten every one of Sukuna's fingers, and Yuuji accepts the arrangement. What drives him is a promise to his dying grandfather: help people unconditionally so he doesn't die alone. Even the name is a clue. Itadori is Japanese knotweed, a traditional pain remedy, which points at his caring side. Gege Akutami designed him after finishing Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Naruto Uzumaki and Ichigo Kurosaki are named as influences. Early on he also carries a built-in Sukuna-finger radar, which Gojo tells him about soon after he moves into the school. Fans also know him by the aliases Sukuna's Vessel and The Tiger of West Junior High.

Personality

Yuuji's moral core is fairness. Yuuji's sense of fairness extends beyond his inner circle; he believes that a person's autonomy deserves respect even when he barely knows them. That belief feeds his obsession with giving people a proper death. It also makes him treat taking a human life as wrong, something to avoid unless nothing else is left. None of this makes him a brooder. He is loud, goofy and easily excited, whether he is gushing about Tokyo with Nobara or begging to train with Gojo. Junya Enoki, his Japanese voice actor, describes him as a straightforward guy who still comes across as smart because of how he reads and analyses a fight. Enoki also says the part let him play a huge emotional range. One fan essay goes darker. It argues he will accept morally grey acts if they save lives, and that he accepts his own fate because only he can contain Sukuna.

Abilities

Yuuji starts with no innate cursed technique, so his early fights come down to raw athleticism. His cursed energy output sits below Yuta's or Gojo's. One of Yuuji's most notable combat strengths is his ability to trigger Black Flash repeatedly during intense battles. Divergent Fist creates a second impact when Yuuji's cursed energy follows his physical blow with a slight delay. It began as a flaw in how he handled cursed energy. Todo challenges Yuuji to refine his combat approach, while his developing control of cursed energy helps him understand Black Flash. Later he learned to use the delayed second hit deliberately, notably against Choso. His defensive toolkit includes Simple Domain, which can counter a domain's guaranteed-hit effect; he also uses bladed weapons in combat.

Key relationships contains spoilers

At Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuuji forms close bonds with his fellow first-years, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. Gojo is his teacher and the one who arranges his reprieve from execution. Sukuna, an ancient and exceptionally dangerous curse, shares Yuuji’s body as his vessel. The family connections are unusual: the fan-maintained genealogy links Yuuji to Sukuna as a grand-nephew, identifies Choso as his older half-brother, and describes Kenjaku as his biological mother using Kaori Itadori’s body. During the Culling Game storyline, Yuuji works alongside Megumi and other sorcerers as they confront the deadly rules and conflicts surrounding the event. Hana shares her body with Angel, an ancient sorcerer whose abilities she can access. On the shipping side, the big pairings are ItaFushi (Megumi), GoYuu (Gojo) and SukuIta (Sukuna), plus gen groupings like ItaFushiKugi.

Story arc contains spoilers

A 2025 academic paper reads Season 1 through the Hero's Journey, framing him as a reluctant student who becomes a determined hero wrestling with identity and responsibility. The harder turn comes later. Junpei’s death marks a turning point in Yuuji’s confrontation with Mahito, bringing his anger to the surface and making his response increasingly ruthless. Sukuna's rampage at Shibuya is the real pivot, and fans describe the arc as dismantling his save-everyone idealism. Enoki singled out Yuuji's breakdown afterwards and says he accidentally cried while recording it. By Chapter 257, Yuuji has access to both Blood Manipulation and Shrine. The former becomes available to him after he consumes the Death Painting Wombs. A Game Rant piece claims he has none, but it looks outdated. The manga's closing battle ends with Yuuji delivering the decisive blow after Nobara's intervention disrupts Sukuna. Yuuji follows through with a powerful Black Flash, bringing the confrontation to an end.

Why fans argue about Yuuji

Critics have been positive overall, and many praised his development. Some questioned how distinctive he is as a shonen lead. Forum fans split harder. One MyAnimeList poster calls him more in-depth than Tanjiro, while another calls him overrated and says Tanjiro grows more consistently. A Poggers analysis argues his lack of a clear motivation is one reason polls overlook him. It also notes that whole arcs and a movie tell stories set before he appears. The polls are messier than the memes. In the official Shonen Jump polls he placed 1st, then 3rd, 2nd and 2nd. In the third poll Megumi won, and in the fourth Gojo took first with 113,392 votes. A 2026 Ranking! survey of 2,498 Japanese respondents about Season 3 characters put Yuuji first, ahead of Panda and Yuta. The writeup suggests Gojo's limited screen time in Season 3 may explain that. Which poll you cite decides how popular he looks.
